One of the core components of our work is professional development of teachers and teacher educators in early grades through a variety of long and short duration blended distance learning programs on early literacy and multilingual education.
These courses are aimed at improving language teaching practices of teachers, building
their capacity in multi-lingual education practices, and equipping resource persons and
master trainers to provide effective support to teachers.
This is LLF’s flagship professional development course which aims at providing participants with an improved conceptual understanding and practical skills of teaching language and literacy in early grades.
This course is primarily meant for cluster/block level resource persons to enable them to provide effective academic support to teachers through trainings, school visits and monthly meetings. In the next two years 2,460 teachers and academic resource persons would complete the 3-month course.
The 1 month course is designed to focus on specific topics for participants who have good overall knowledge of early language and literacy, but need deeper understanding of specific themes of language and literacy in early grades. First batch of Reading Comprehension and Changemakers Course completed in 2017. In the next two years 900 teachers/teacher educators would complete various short term courses.
The Multilingual Education Course aims to develop conceptual understanding about effective approaches and strategies for multilingual education. Participants who complete this course would be able to support children who come from a different home language background to develop strong oral language and literacy skills in the school language by first building a foundation in the home language
LLF signed an MOU with the Haryana School Shiksha Pariyojna Parishad (HSSPP) in August 2017. The state project involves capacity building of school teachers in teaching of Hindi language in early grades and field-based implementation of a learning improvement programme in selected districts. For the first demonstration project in Kurukshetra district, LLF is supporting the district education system to bring about a transformation in the teaching-learning of Hindi and improve students’ reading and writing outcomes in 180 schools. Through this project 3,125 teachers and teacher educators will have improved teaching-learning process.
LLF signed a 3-year MOU with Rajasthan Council of Secondary Education (RCSE) in February, 2018 for developing teacher capacity and implementation of a multilingual program in selected government schools in Dungarpur and Banswada districts. The project aims to develop a systematic approach for home to school language transition and practices for developing strong language and literacy skills in Hindi by the end of grade 2 and improvement in children’s learning outcomes in Hindi. It includes a study research component.
LLF has signed a MoU with the Government of Chhattisgarh to support State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) and the Rajiv Gandhi Siksha Mission (RGSM) in building capacities of teachers and teacher educators on early language and literacy development (ELL) and multilingual education (MLE). LLF is implementing a multi-pronged strategy that includes conducting professional development courses for teachers and teacher educators (SCERT/DIET faculty, BRCCs, CACs) and developing resource packs on ELL. To address the issues that have emerged out of the prevailing diversified language situation, LLF is also supporting the state government in development of a policy on MLE and also in development of workshops and a 4 month course on MLE. Through this project 3,618 teachers and teacher educators will have improved teaching-learning process.
LLF is the technical partner for Early language and literacy in the Gujarat Education Coalition (GEC) aimed to strengthen the Foundational Literacy and Numeracy in government schools of Gujarat. LLF is supporting the Department of Education (DoE), Gujarat Council for Education Research and Training (GCERT) in revising the content of grades 1 and 2 keeping the principles of Early Language and Literacy in focus. GEC (Gujarat Education Coalition) is the coalition of four partner organizations (Central Square Foundation, Reach to Teach, Akshara Foundation, and LLF) working with the Gujarat govt. Education Department with the objective to improve the Foundation Literacy and Numeracy across the state in govt. schools. In 2019, LLF partnered as one of the technical partner for language pedagogy, content development, training and classroom observation under the GEC for the Foundation Literacy.
LLF is working with the Government of Uttar Pradesh to support Mission Prerna and State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) for providing technical assistance for FLN (Foundational Literacy & Numeracy) in the state. LLF has developed Teaching Learning Materials (Conversation Charts, Story Posters, Poem Posters and graded storybooks) and Teachers Guide for grades 1 to 3. LLF is building capacities of teachers and teacher educators on early language and literacy development (ELL) that includes conducting professional development courses for teachers and teacher educators (SRG, SCERT/DIET faculty, ARPs, and teachers). Through this project 288 teachers and teacher educators have gone through with the courses and 3,000 teacher educators are going through the course currently to improved teaching-learning process
The Prarambhik Bhasha Shikshan Karyakram in the state of Odisha is a Technical Partnership with OSEPA (Odisha School Education Programme Authority ) for Foundational Literacy and Language learning in grades 1 and grade 2. It is a first of it’s kind of an intervention for LLF with a state for state - wide implementation across all Elementary schools in the State . A 4 year MoU between LLF and Department of School and Mass Education Odisha was signed in April 2020. The Programme will be launched under the banner of Foundational Literacy and Numeracy which is a current national priority. Dedicated teachers for instruction in these grades have been notified by the State for implementing the programme in schools and will undergo a structured online training programme.
